Musing Mondays (Nov.15)

I was reading Eleanor Roosevelt’s book, “You Learn By Living“, viaGoogle Books the other day, and came across a quote that really struck a chord with me. The quote said this:

“What counts, in the long run, is not what you read; it is what you 
sift through in your own mind; it is the ideas and impressions 
that are aroused in you by your reading.”
(pg. 7-8, “You Learn By Living” by Eleanor Roosevelt)

What do you think about this quote? Do you believe this to be true? If so, why and how? And, if not, why not?

I think what I read is important. Some things I read I need to meditate, or ponder over in my mind. This kind of reading is not the sifting through kind of reading, but something much deeper. This kind of reading keeps our minds growing and learning new things in this ever expanding world.  However, when I am reading for entertainment, then I agree about the sifting through my reading. The ideas and impressions are important in arousing my mind, as to whether I will continue reading this book or throw it aside.


I may be seeing this quote in a different light than others, but that is how I understand it.


I do agree that reading is important.  I learn so much from reading, I think we need to read if we want to learn new things and continuing learning. I have a few favorite quotes about books, the first is by Henry Ward Beecher, it reads: "A home without books is like a room without windows." And I think we can all agree with Thomas Jefferson when he said, "I cannot live without books."


Being a lover of other peoples quotes my other blog is where I post Quotes and Things.  However, on November 6, 2010, I changed the format a bit, and only post the poetry or quotes I've written myself.
