There is so much involved with the techniques of the pattern, that I included the scarf pattern along with the techniques you will need to crochet it. In the process of doing this I also included all the other patterns as well.

If you click on the directions they will enlarge, and hopefully you will be able to print them. Let me know if that works and then I can delete all these posts. Have a great day and enjoy your crocheting. But is it really that odd? A search for offbeat place-names in the United States indicates that it's not so peculiar, after all.

Pull out your atlas, and in Michigan, you are sure to end up in Hell. Lawyersville, you'll discover, is not another name for Washington, DC, but thrives in New York State. I think I will take a few days away from my crocheting and read an entertaining book. Maybe, a short easy fun read. I know I don't feel like thinking to deeply while I read this week-end. But what to read? I think I will read a book by a new author I've never read before. I have a book by Karen Harter "Autumn Blue." and since I have never read anything Karen Harter has written I will try reading this book this week-end.

Sunday, November 8, 2009

I finished reading Autumn Blue today and I have to say I enjoyed it. It was a nice quiet week-end read, just what I needed. It was centered around a family, a single mother I should say with three children who needs help. The oldest child is a 15 year old troubled boy. As the story unfolds the retired neighbor man is brought into the story to help, even though he would just as soon be left alone. Actually, it is a warm engaging family drama.

"Your Eyes Saw The Embryo...."

"Your eyes saw even the embryo of me, and in your book all its parts were down in writing." Psalms 139:16

David, who penned those words, had no knowledge of cells and genes, being without even a microscope. But he correctly discerned that the development of his own body attested to advance planning. David may have had some knowledge of how embryos develop, so he could reason that each step must take place according to a preexisting design and timetable. In poetic language, he described this design as being "down in Writing" in God's "book." Building instructions for our body are "written" in the chemical structure of your personal DNA. Every time your cells divide--to make new cells or to replace old cells--your DNA passes those instructions on, thereby keeping you alive and maintaining your basic appearance. What an outstanding example of the power and wisdom of our heavenly Maker!

The picture is of my Great-grand-daughter Madyson. Since I am planning on doing some crocheting this month, I thought I would listen to a book. It is a bit difficult to crochet and read a book at the same time. But, hopeful I will be able to multi-task, crochet, and listen at the same time.

It was difficult to decide what to read this month, since I felt like reading a mystery. Who would it be, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Jessica Fletcher, or Stephanie Plum? I decided none of the above. I haven't read a Dick Francis mystery for quite awhile, and since I have this one on tape, why not listen to it?! It is one of his older books, written in 1992. However, like I always say, it doesn't matter how old the book is, if you haven't read it, it's new to you.

It's about a young ex-jockey Freddie Croft. He owns a profitable fleet of horse vans that convey runners to the course. A man of few illusions about racing's smarmier aspects, including its many opportunities for crime, Freddie is a stickler for security. But even he is startled by the violence that erupts when an employee breaks one of his hard-and-fast rules: Never pick up a hitchhiker. In the first of many ironies, the hitchhiking passenger--not the driver--turns up dead. And if one corpse is bad for business, what happens next could well cost Freddie his life, as he finds himself driven into the heart of malign conspiracy, where appearances deceive.

It is approximately 3 hours in length. So that will go much faster than if I read the book. So, as not to neglect Stephanie, I may listen to one of her books this month too.

Happy reading everyone. Or listening if that is your choice this month.

"Two Lovely and Sweet Awards"

"My Reading Corner" has just received two blog awards from Mary Anne Gruen, at Starlight Blog .

Mary Anne Gruen is a writer from New York, NY. I really am suppose to go through all the followers and list them below, but I am tired and have a cold and don't really feel like it right now, so please be kind to this old Gramma and help yourself to some of the cake.

Thank you Mary Anne for this "One Lovely Blog Award." It is a biography written by Claire Tomalin.

At her death in 1817, Jane left the world six of the most beloved novels written in English--but her shortsighted family destroyed the bulk of her letters; and if she kept any diaries they did not survive her. Now her acclaimed biographer Claire Tomalin has filled the gaps in the record, creating a remarkably fresh and convincing portrait of the woman and the writer.

While most Austen biographers have accepted the assertion of Jane's brother Henry that "My dear Sister's life was not a life of events," Tomalin shows that, on the contrary, Austen's brief life was fraught with upheaval. Tomalin provides detailed and absorbing accounts of Austen's ill-fated love for a young Irishman, her frequent travels and extended visits to London, her close friendship with a worldly cousin whose French husband met his death on the guillotine, her brothers' naval service in the Napoleonic wars and in the colonies, and thus shatters the myth of Jane Austen as a sheltered and homebound spinster whose knowledge of the world was limited to the view from a Hampshire village.

So I will be off to my Little Corner of the World to read more about Jane.

"P. So this week-end I am going to indulge myself and read one of her books entitled: "Bride on the Loose," just for fun and relaxation. It is just a fluffy little book about a guy, James Manning content with his life as a bachelor, a slob, and a sports fan. Then a precocious girl named Carrie Weston decides to play matchmaker, introducing him to her mother, Charlotte. To his relief, Charlotte is as averse to marriage as he is. But Jason's feelings start to change once he gets to know his "Bride on the Loose."

So I'm going to the Reading Corner and read myself silly!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://annsreadingcorner.blogspot.com/2009/10/bride-on-loose.html' title='"P. A lot of events have been planned, but one of the most visible ones is the "new dress" that they put on the Eiffel Tower. That was my reason for downloading all these pictures of the Eiffel Tower today from the live camera. So we could all enjoy her "new dress." I found this information here.

The picture above was taken about a half hour after the one below, no fog, where did it go?
This is after dark, about an hour later, I think around 8 o'clock Paris time, and it is still all fogged in. But isn't it lovely, with an eerie kind of feeling.

I clicked on the live camera of the Eiffel Tower, I think around 7 o'clock Paris time, and there it is all fogged in. It looks like today in Paris was a gloomy day. It is a gloomy, rainy, day here in my little corner of the other side of the world, today. Paris is 7 hours ahead of me. I caught this picture around noon, my time, here in Iowa.

What is the weather like in your little corner of the world today?

"Bad Dogs Have More Fun"

Oh my! Here it is October 5th, and I haven't finished reading my book of choice for September yet. My excuse, I was not feeling well for a week, had a cold, and every time I picked up the book and started to read, I fell asleep. But, that was good, because while I slept I felt good. I will finish "Austenland" in a day or two, and then I can start reading my October Book Choice Of The Month: (Drum Roll)

"Bad Dogs Have More Fun."

"Bad Dogs Have More Fun" is an unforgettable collection of more than seventy-five newspaper articles from The Philadelphia Inquirer written by former columnist John Grogan.

Combining humor, wit, poignancy, and affection, these columns provide insight into the intriguing and wonderful world we live in. Whether it be writing about animals (from dogs to elephants to geese!) powerful and moving comments about his own and other families, trenchant comments on life's foibles and farces, or his interviews and interactions with people who are memorable and unusual in their own right, John Grogan makes us laugh--he makes us cry--he makes us think..... So says the book cover..... I am looking forward to reading this, I need something happy and fun to read, being that winter is just around the corner.

Just in case anyone doesn't know who John Grogan is, he was the author of "Marley And Me." If you haven't read that book or seen the movie you are in for a treat. It was a fun book to read, and the movie was fun too, but I would recommend reading the book, before viewing the movie. Oh well, I guess I am a bit late for that advice!

Happy Reading everyone. What is your book choice for the month of October?

"Austenland"

Since I am a Jane Austen fan, I came across this book as I was browsing in Barnes and Nobles bookstore a few days ago. I finished reading my September book choice, so decided to read this book as my second book choice for the rest of the month of September.

Austenland is a novel written by Shannon Hale. I have never read any of her books before. However, the little write-up on the inside cover sounds like it will be a fun read for Austen fans.

"Jane Hayes is a seemingly normal young New Yorker, but she has a secret. Her obsession with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, is ruining her life. No real man can compare.

When a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-crazed women, Jane's fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become realer than she ever could have imagined. Decked out in empire-waist gowns, stripped of her modern appliances, Jane throws herself into mastering Regency etiquette and flirts with gardeners and gentlemen--or maybe even she suspects, with the actors who are playing them.

It's all a game, Jane knows. And yet the longer she stays, the more her insecurities seem to vanish. Is she about to kick the Austen obsession for good, or could all her dreams actually culminate in a Mr. Darcy fo her own?

With humor, charm, and perfect sympathy, Shannon Hale delivers a novel that will delight every reader who has ever dreamed of escaping into Austenland." So reads the inside cover....

As I said before, this is a novel for Jane Austen Fans....

Now, I'm off to Austenland....for the next day or two. See you when I get back!

October 5th, 2009, Monday.

I finished reading Austenland today, and it was a fun read, but not a favorite of mine. On a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 3 or 4. Maybe because I was busy all month and sick for a week, I just couldn't get into the book. Maybe because I read it in bits and pieces, had something to do with it not being as interesting a book as I thought it was going to be. Whatever the reason, I hope anyone else who reads it enjoys it more then I did. And Oh Yes, you need to be a Jane Austen fan to even begin to enjoy this book a little bit.

Paris In The Moonlight"

I was just checking in on the live camera of Paris, and was so surprised to see the Eiffel Tower with the moon in the background. I recently read this short article she wrote about Grandparents, and since I am now a Grandparent, I thought I would post it here in "My Reading Corner."

"If I'd known grandchildren were going to be so much fun, I'd have had them first."

A preschooler who lives down the street was curious about grandparents. It occurred to me that, to a child, grandparents appear like an apparition with no explanation, no job description and few credentials. They just seem to go with the territory.

This, then is for the little folks who wonder what a grandparent is.

A grandparent can always be counted on to buy all your cookies, flower seeds, all-purpose greeting cards, transparent tape, paring knives, peanut brittle and ten chances on a pony. (Also a box of taffy when they have dentures.)

A grandparent helps you with the dishes when it is your night.

A grandparent will sit through a Greek comedy for three hours to watch her grandson and wonder how Aristophanes has time to write plays when he is married to Jackie Onassis.

A grandparent is the only baby-sitter who doesn't charge more after midnight--or anything before midnight.

A grandparent buys you gifts your mother says you don't need.

A grandparent arrives three hours early for you baptism, your graduation and your wedding because he or she wants a seat where he or she can see everything.

A grandparent pretends he doesn't know who you are when you play dress-up.

A grandparent loves you from when you're a bald baby to a bald father and all the hair in between.

A grandparent will put a sweater on you when she is cold, feed you when she is hungry and put you to bed when she is tired.

A grandparent will brag about you when you get a typing pin that eighty other girls got.

A grandparent will frame a picture of your hand that you traced and put it in her Mediterranean living room.

A grandparent will help you with your buttons, your zippers and your shoelaces and not be in any hurry for you to grow up.

When you're a baby, a grandparent will check to see if you are crying when you are sound asleep.

When a grandchild say, "Grandma, how come you didn't have any children?" a grandparent holds back the tears.

~ Erma Bombeck ~

"Real Life at the White House" Book Choice for September.

A few weeks ago Brenda perked my interest in this book, "Real Life at the White House." So last week I went to the library and had them order it for me. I decided to make it "My Book Choice" for the month of September. And believe me, it will probably take me that long to read it and maybe some of October, (but I hope not.)

It has forty-two chapters--one for each administration--it ends with President William Jefferson Clinton, (the forty-second president). The book was published in 2000.

This over-the-shoulder peek at America's most famous residence reveals the intimate life of each president and his family. The history of family squabbles, china patterns, built-in closets (a luxury added during the Truman renovation), plumbing (Taft was too big for the White House bathtub), telephones, pets, pests, and the Secret Service is unveiled on this tour of two centuries at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

I am looking forward to reading this little bit of history about the 200 years of daily life at America's most famous residence, "The White House."

So, off I go to "My Reading Corner".........

Tuesday, September 15, 2009.

I just finished this book today. It was an enjoyable read, and quite the eye-opener of what goes on behind the scenes!

It makes you wonder sometimes how the country runs as smoothly as it does. I would recommend it to others who are interested in history, and the comings and goings on in the "White House."

After reading this book it is a house I would never want to live in! And I don't envy anyone who does.....

And I will never visit it. Why?????

Because.....it is haunted!!!!! >^..^< Need I say more?.....

"Dean Martin, Through His Daughter's Eyes"

This week I have been reading this book, by Deana Martin about her famous father. She writes, "Sometimes, just sometimes, they ask me the most important question of all: "Was he a good father?" To their surprise, I shake my head and smile. "No," I reply. "He wasn't a good father, but he was a good man. Where Dad came from, that meant a great deal more."

So begins Deana's heartfelt memoir of her father.

Deana recalls her early childhood, when she and her siblings were left in the care of Dean's loving but alcoholic first wife, Betty MacDonald. One day when Deana was nine years old, her mother Betty left the children with their Aunt Anne. Anne realized that Betty could no longer care for the children, therefore she took them to Dean at his home and explained the situation. From that point on the three sisters lived with Dean and Jeanne. Dean got custody of the children, and they finally gained stability in their young lives.

Deana displays remarkable understanding of her father's complex temperament. An unemotional man, Dean disliked small talk and enjoyed golf because it was a game he could play without too much social interaction. He was disciplined and actually drank very little, though he gained a reputation as a drunk because he sometimes acted that way. (A glass of apple juice in his hand masquerading as scotch, he perfected the role.)

I am only half way through the book so more will come later.....

Saturday, August 29, 2009

I finished reading the book yesterday. It was an OK read, but my question is: Why do these children of famous people write books about their famous parents anyway? Is it for the 15 minutes of glory, the money, the sensationalism, insensibility, WHY?

We all had problems in our lives, and we have wonderful fun-filled memories. So keep a journal... But, why do they feel they have to write about it and tell the world all the nitty-gritty sordid details?

I think Dean was right when he told her the first time she decided to write a book about her memories. Dean told her to burn it!!!! She was only going to write it the first time for the money, which amounted to $10,000. In this day and age $10,000 dollars doesn't go very far... I wonder what she got to write the book this time?

This is my viewpoint and my viewpoint only, I think she is riding on the coat-tail of her father as long as she can.

Maybe, she should have taken the wise advice her father gave her the first time, and burned this book also!

"Life Lessons From Lovebirds"

While I was meandering through the pages of the book "Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers," this morning, I came across this story about Lovebirds. At the end of the story, the author, Vickie Lynne Agee, listed 10 life lessons we can learn from Lovebirds.

1. If you spend too much time looking in the mirror, it's easy to lose your balance.

2. Always keep a pleasant look on your face, even if your cage needs cleaning.

3. If your mate wants to share your perch with you, move over.

4. The real treats in life usually come only after you've cracked a few hulls.

5. It takes two to snuggle.

6. Sometimes your mate can see mites you didn't even know you had.

7. Singing draws more affection than squawking.

8. It is only when your feathers get ruffled that your true colors really show.

9. Too many toys can be distracting.

10. Time to decide my "Book of the Month." I think I will make my choice of "Book of the Month....."Little Lady Agency and The Prince." This is the third book in the series, and I believe the last. So, why not finish reading the series and then move on to something else next month.

From all the reviews I've read this book in the series is to be a bit better than the second one, the one I just read in July. It sounds like it will be "Deliciously witty," and a fun read.

The back cover says, and this is all I know about the book, so I will quote: "Making plans for her wedding to American fiance' Jonathan Riley, who now runs a prestigious Parisian real estate company, Melissa agrees to do a favor for her beloved grandmother: transform the notorious Prince Nicolas von Helsing-Alexandros into a proper gentleman for the sake of preserving a family inheritance. Even possessive Jonathan agrees it's a great opportunity to make social connections, and Melissa gets swept up in a whirl of late-night dinners, polo matches, and a Mediterranean cruise. But taming Prince Nicky, who is as charming as he is exasperating, suddenly has bride-to-be Melissa dreaming of a fairy-tale ending--and not the one she expected!"

So I think I will enjoy reading this book in my relaxing, recreational time this month. I notice it takes me about a month to get one of Hester Browne's books read, because they are the same as reading two or three other books. It has 391 pages and I read between 20-90 pages on the days that I read. I do have other more serious reading I do each day. On this blog I only talk about my recreational reading.

So, off to "My Reading Corner" I will go and start my new book of the month....

"Little Lady, Big Apple" Review

I just finished reading "Little Lady, Big Apple" today. I got hooked by the first book in the series and rushed out and bought the next two. I liked this book, but it lacked something that the first had. The first one had a bit more charm and was a bit more witty and funny. This time we find Melissa joining her boyfriend Jonathan for an extended holiday in Manhattan. Where he turned into a pompous snob. It became very predictable as the story line unfolded. And along with that, there was a lot of loose ends left unfinished, maybe they will be tied up in the next book of the series. I think some of the story seemed unnecessary and prolonged the story unnecessarily. But, I am looking forward to reading the third book in the series. I hope it will bring all the loose ends together and I won't be left hanging by a thread.... wondering......

It was an OK and fun read. And left me looking forward to reading the third book in the series.

"July's Book Of The Month......"

I have already read Hester Browne's debut novel "The Little Lady Agency" and enjoyed it. So off to the bookstore I went last winter and bought two sequels. So my Book choice for the month of July is...the second book in the sequel, "Little Lady, Big Apple."

For those of you who aren't familiar with "The Little Lady Agency" books, they are about a efficient secretary Melissa who set up her own etiquette and grooming agency. She isn't confident enough to run it herself, so she dons a blond wig and becomes Honey, a no-nonsense bombshell who helps clueless bachelors shop and entertain. A confident Mary Poppins in silk stockings, she even attends parties if a client needs a "date." Therein, some funny moments occur....

The first book in the sequel was a classic comedy of manners with a funny comedy of errors.

I am hoping the sequels will be as light-hearted and full of funny moments as the first one was.

Off to "My Reading Corner" to start reading my Book Choice of the Month. "Little Lady, Big Apple."

"Same Time Next Year"

This book is two books in one. I just finished reading the one entitled: "Same Time Next Year" yesterday. It was a nice easy week-end read and was alright but very predictable. It didn't take much to figure out the plot. Most of the time I new where the story line was leading. Maybe, I have just read to many Debbie Macomber books. But, I am just a sentimental sap and like the light fluffy stories.

Would I recommend it to others to read? Therefore, I welcome you back...but I think I will probably keep my posting to one or two times a month this time. I'll see. I'm also thinking about keeping you private. After all you are not a very interesting blog...Come to think of it, none of my blogs are very interesting, not like everyone elses. Oh well, you are just for my entertainment as is all my blogs...Anyone who cares to read and be bored along with me. WELCOME!

Today, I decided I needed some comfortable and cozy reading, so I am going to read a Debbie Macomber book entitled: "Same Time, Next Year."

It sounds like a nice fun week-end book to read and if I don't finish it this week-end, I always have evenings and next week-end.

What a hoe-down this town is having next week-end (July 2-5). It is the 150 year celebration of this town. It has been around 150 years. I think I will spent my time on the porch those four days and stay out of the way of the comings and goings, and just enjoy reading my book.

I will close the "Reading Corner" for now and get to my book. Happy Reading...

"Eleanor Roosevelt And Franklin Roosevelt"

A friend send me this picture of the Roosevelt's as newlyweds, I think. So I said to myself, "Why not write about "Some of your favorite things." So here goes....

One of my favorite things is; I love to watch a beautiful waterfalls. Not only are they lovely, but for some reason when watching a waterfalls I find it very relaxing.

Another of my favorite things is the autumn season. I just love the beauty of the many different colored leaves. Just looking out over an ocean of forest and the variety of the many different colors is just breathtaking.

A good book to read is another favorite thing that I enjoy doing. If I have a good book to read I never get bored. Really it's the opposite, I never seem to have enough time to spend with my books and my reading.

I'm finding I also enjoy blogging, which I don't know if that is good or bad. I love writing down my thoughts and reading what other people are writing about. Some are quite interesting. Whereas others I just pass on by and don't give them the time of day. I'm kinda like that with books. If I start to read a book and I don't find it interesting, I don't waste my time reading it. I have learned over my years of reading, that if a book is boring in the first third of the book, it probably won't get any better the next two thirds of the book either. I realize it takes a short period of time to set up the story line, but when it goes on and on and nothing interesting is happening it probably isn't going to happen later on.

I love my quiet time, which is one of my very favorite things. I no longer need a lot of activities going on around me to be happy. Part of my quiet time I like to spend listening to the radio, that is if it is playing my favorite music. So listening to the radio is also one of my favorite things to do. Which I do many Sunday afternoons. This past week listening to my favorite "Musical Memories" radio show, I called in and guessed who was singing the song and won a $20.00 gift certificate to the "Ox Yoke Restaurant." Of course we will be using it, since we love eating out...

Another favorite thing I like to do, is watch a good movie on TV. I even like being able to watch it alone or maybe with friends who will enjoy watching it with me. I don't like a lot of distractions when I am watching a movie. Otherwise, I miss a lot of what is going on and miss the whole point of the movie. I really am beginning to sound like a snooty kind of a person. Oh! well that's just the way it is with me. If I am going to watch a movie, I want to be able to follow the story and know what is going on, otherwise it becomes very boring and I loose interest in it.

Well, I have to get back to my "Reading Corner" and get back to reading.
