"Booking Through Thursday"

btt button
I was talking to a co-worker the other day about a book I’d read recently, and realized how very, very few people I can do that with. In my daily life, it seems like almost no-one reads anything more than a newspaper or a fashion magazine. I only have one person I can truly chat about books with … and yet, being a Capital-R-Reader, I simply can’t imagine going through life without a book constantly at hand, or shelves of them proudly displayed downstairs. I’m proud of being a person who not only reads, but who reads a lot–not just in volume but in variety. I like having an inquiring mind. I like exploring new ideas. I love following an intricately plotted story (the more layers the better). I love BEING a reader and simply can’t imagine what it’s like to go through life without being one.
Am I the only one who feels this way? That wonders at how other people can simply NOT do something that should be so essential? Who feels almost sad that so many people seem content to go through their lives without stretching their mental wings at all?
Can you imagine NOT being a Reader? How does it shape your life? Your perception of it?
How does being a Reader affect your relationship with all those folks who are looking at it from the other side and simply can’t understand how you can sit and READ all the time?
Yep, it’s a long-winded, philosophical springboard to a ephemeral conversation … go, see what you can make of it!

WOW!!! What will I say today? I don't know!

I really don't know what all the people looking at it from the other side think of me and my reading. I know that all my friends know about my love of reading. On Saturday my hubby bought me a Kindle Fire, because he read they are easy on the eyes, since they have the background light. I am lovin' it!  However, a few of my neighbors love to read, and sometimes borrow books from me, so I'm not completely alone in my love of reading.
Occasionally, what amazes me, is that some of the children in the neighborhood, will stop by to visit me and say they are bored, I say, "well why are you visiting me of all people. I am never bored, because if you pick up a book and start reading you won't be bored, and you can go anywhere in the world without leaving your home."   Sometimes while they are here, we even read a book together. A few times they have brought their own books for us to read together. So I guess my always having my nose in a book, Nook or Kindle, isn't so bad afterall, now that I think about it...
"A home without books, is like a house without windows, so open the windows of your mind, and let some fresh air in."
Happy Reading Everyone!!!

  1. I like that image of opening windows...and also enjoyed what you told the "bored" kids. I know I am only bored if I have no access to books.

With books, there is always a way to expand our worlds.

  3. Great answer. Somehow, people don't understand that I'm never bored. In any dull moment, I pick up a book and I'm immediately fine. Here's my BTT: http://meganm922.blogspot.com/2012/11/booking-through-thursdaybeing-reader.html

  5. Good answer. I came to the conclusion that a lot of my friends like to read even if we don't always like the same books. http://dawntreader-island2.blogspot.se/2012/11/booking-through-thursday-being-reader.html

  6. Instilling the love of reading and the value of books in children is probably the best gift you can give.

  11. I always have my nose in a book too. I've always been that way.
I feel sorry for non-readers. I have a friend who actually told me reading gives her a headache.
