"Booking Through Thursday"

This week’s Booking Through Thursday question asks…
All things being equal (money, space, etc), would you rather own copies of the books you read? Or borrow them?

I definitely would rather own copies of the books I read. That is one of the reasons I have my own personal library. I do love my local library, however, I always feel pressured to get the books read quickly when I borrow them from the library. When I own the books, I can take my time and read at my own pace, which is the way I like it.

If I didn't have my own personal library, how could my friends, and neighbors, borrow books to read, with no pressure to get them read in a short period of time?

How about you, which do you prefer, own or borrow?

  1. if it's a good book, i want to own it. if it's a classic, i want to own it. and if it is "destined to be a classic", i want to own it. (of course, i don't believe in destiny, but i couldn't think of another way to phrase that)

  2. Great answer! I'm the same way too, I have to own my books. All the better to re-read them! :)

  3. I'm more of a borrower, but I buy the books I really like.

  4. As you know from visiting my blog (thanks!), I, too, love having my own books. And for the reasons you listed, the library is not the first place I go for a book.

  6. I agree about feeling pressure because of library dates. I always end up having to give money which I don't mind either until get to be a lot.

  7. I prefer to own - that way I don't have to keep track of returning them.

  8. I’m a big re-reader so I like to own my books. Good point about having to read library books quickly I like to take my time owning books makes that eassier.

  9. I agree with the time constraints of borrowing! I feel like I finish fewer books that I check out from the library because of the time constraints. I would much rather buy my own copy and read it when I am in the mood!

  10. I am a constant public library user. It seems when I own books I'm always loaning them so they disappear. Most of those are garage sale purchases anyway. Final gifts is one I always have on hand to loan when needed. (I'm on my fourth copy) My latest purchase was "Heaven is for Real" If you haven't read it, give it a try. Delightful.

  12. I must admit, I DO love being surrounded by books as well! I also like your generous spirit when it comes to loaning your books out.

    Thanks for commenting!
