Multi-Tasking March 10, 2011

btt button
Do you multi-task when you read? Do other things like stirring things on the stove, brushing your teeth, watching television, knitting, walking, et cetera?
Or is it just me, and you sit and do nothing but focus on what you’re reading?
(Or, if you do both, why, when, and which do you prefer?)

When I read, it is just me and the book. I like quiet when I read, no TV, no radio, only me and my book. The only time I multi-task, is when I'm waiting in the car for my hubby, I read and do a little people watching in between.
How about you, can you multi-task and read also?

No, Dolly is not a new Tabloid reporter, but this is a feature so that we can all get to know each other better.
This Week's Questions.

1. Author Jessica Park commented this week on Facebook that "Naming characters takes me almost as long as it does to write the book." Which lead me to start thinking about names. Is there a story behind your first name?
My first name is Anna. I always thought I was named after my Great-aunt Annie. However a year or so ago I was telling my oldest sister (she is 14 years older than me) that I figured Mom named me after our Aunt. She surprised me when she said, "Oh No. Mom didn't name you I did." She went on to say, "I told Mom and Daddy that I would like to name you, and they let me." I was truly surprised.
2, Do you think parents today give more thought to the names they give their children than our parents did?
I don't know about the parents today, but I know we thought about what we would name our children. We both had to agree to the name, now that is where it got pretty difficult by the time the fifth one came along.
3. What is the most unusual child's name you have noticed recently?
I have two granddaughters with unusual names, or so they seem so to me. One is Mercedez, I guess that is not such an unusual name, but it took me a long time to learn to spell it. The other granddaughters name is Kaia, which I am still trying to pronounce her name correctly. I also have a granddaughter named Cheyenne.

  1. I can't multi-task when I'm reading either. I like the quiet.

  2. I can read everywhere and can be noisy. My daughters do not let it be otherwise.
    Have a nice day :)

  4. I, like you, am definitely am not a multitasker when it comes to reading and life in general. I think today's parents want unusual names but they forget that someday these cute little people will be old. That was one of the things we considered with our boys. When they were the age we are now and in the work field, weould the name work?

  8. New follower here....

At first I didn't think that I multi-tasked when I read, but then when I really thought about it I guess I do. I eat and read. I also mute the commercials and read while watching TV. I drive to work and listen to a book too. So yes, I definitely multi-task and read.

As for my first name, well my mom says she got it out of one of those baby name books because my dad wanted to name me Carmen, and she really did not like that name. I'm so glad she went with her pick, because I just can't picture me as a Carmen. I do wish they would have given me a middle name though, I felt cheated out of that one. :)

  9. I multitask and have always done so. For me it's unthinkable not to read while brushing my teeth ;-)

  11. I can multi-task if I have to, but I really prefer to concentrate on one thing at a time. Especially when I'm reading!

  12. The multi-tasking question reminds me of when I used to walk outside & read at the same time. Of course, I had to peek up occasionally to watch for people & cars :D

  13. I like to be alone, sitting comfortably while reading. No interruptions. As for my name, I was told, my Dad named me, and it was because of a girl he had a crush on. My parents were 13 and 17 when they married, result of my Mother being pregnant. Dad turned 18, 2 months after they married, and 5 months after they married I came along. I remember seeing my baby book and it said to Patricia Ann Custer from Patricia Ann Partlow. I asked my Mother when I was older, who she was and she said a relative of one of my Dad's brothers-in-law. Then I noticed how early I was born after they married and Mom said I was premature. Well I was a 7 month baby, since I was due to be born in Dec., but she was still two months pregnant when they married, it took me a little longer to figure that out, since I was only in the sixth grade at the time. She also turned 14 in Dec. In this day and age, they might have handled it differently, either Mom would have had an abortion or they would have given me up for adoption. And most likely the girls parents would have charged the male with something and had him locked up for a while. But they married, and she stayed with him from 1936 till he died in 2003. He got Alzheimer's and she took care of him at home up till two days before he died when he had to go to the hospital. She has since said, she wasn't happy almost the whole time they were married. Dad didn't take his wedding vows serious, Mom did, even at that young age. Today when I look at her, I feel so bad and sad, because she had so many unhappy years.

  14. I try to multi-task as much as I can.

I love the story of how your sister named you, that is so cool. My sister is much older than me too and we were never that close until I was married and starting having kids, but she lived a couple hours or more away from the time I was about 5, now she is my best friend.

  15. Hi Gigi Ann - I am popping in from the Enquiring Meme at Dollycas's blog.
First - I multi-task to some degree as I read. I listen to the Kindle or Audible as I put on make-up or do mundane tasks like folding laundry etc. I listen to Audible when walking or cleaning too and I listen to audios in the car while driving. When I read print... I only read.
    Second-
Sweet that your sister named you. And I have an unusually named granddaughter too. Wonder what's with that generation?
