"Musing Mondays" (Sept. 20)

This week’s musing asks…
What makes you love / hate a character in a book?

I like a character that is nice, has some common sense about them. I like a bit of comedy in my characters if it can be worked into the storyline.  If you have ever read Jane Austen's Emma, I liked her, even if she was a bit spoiled, her intentions were always wanting to help, even though sometimes she made some serious mistakes mainly due to the fact that she thinks she is always right.  She was never mean or vindictive in her quest to help,  she just misunderstood all the signs of others intentions.
I hate a character that is dark and moody. An example would be Heathcliff in Bronte's Wuthering Heights. He was abusive scornful, and vengeful, a very angry and sometimes malicious individual. Those are the kind of characters I hate.

How about you what makes you love and hate a character in a book?

  2. Good answer! Yes, I think our favorites are multi-dimensional ones with vulnerabilities.

  3. Thoughtful answer. I too am not a fan of brooding. Characters are like real people, it comes down to chemistry. Here’s my Musing for Monday.

  4. Great answer! I've never read Emma or Wuthering Heights, but I know enough about the stories to understand your illustrations. Here's my musing:

  6. Great post!

I like characters who try to do the right thing, most of the time. They may not always succeed, but they usually try.

  7. I agree, I do like a bit of humour in a character.
I liked Emma too even though at times she was a bit of a cat!

I like a bit of vulnerability too and as Suko said, those who do the right thing, eventually!

  8. I can deal with dark and moody as long as it doesn't last throughout the entire book.
