If you’re not enjoying a book, will you stop mid-way? Or do you push through to the end? What makes you decide to stop?
There was a time if I was not enjoying a book I would push through to the end, no matter how boring, or wordy the book. I was always thinking the good part is yet to come, but, over the years I have learned if it is still boring between 50-75 pages, it ain't gonna get any better, so I abandon the book.

If a book begins to get full of smut, or is to gory or bloody, to full of violence, I stop and throw the book in the garbage. I don't even pass them on to others. A boring or to wordy book I may sell to the bookstore, because, I figure it may not be boring to someone else, it just isn't my choice of reading genre.

How about you, what makes you decide to stop reading a book?

  1. Sounds like we think alike on this subject. I have been reading for TOO many years, to know if The book is going to get better. Plus, since at my age, I now consider my tbr list, my "tbr bucket list", it is time to move to the next book

  2. Yes, those are things that turn me off, too. I don't mind a certain amount of violence - since I read a lot of mysteries and thrillers, I have to expect some of that. But unnecessary gore and too much smutty language or behavior are things I just don't put up with. Too many other good books out there!

  3. I know what you mean.

Frankly, I think why should I waste time reading something I don't like when there are so many more to choose from..

  4. I've never actually thrown a book out, but I came close with Sophie's Choice - the narrator couldn't keep his mind out of the gutter. I was sorely tempted to add it to the compost a few pages at a time but I just couldn't bring myself to destroy a book. So it went back to the charity I bought it from.

And yes, I did finish it ... but I really wish I'd had the sense not to.

  5. Hey, sometimes books don't deserve to be read. As a librarian I am constantly telling students that it is OK to abandon a book, but they have to give it a fair start. I like Nancy Pearl's rule: Read 100 minus age before abandoning.

  6. I don't think I've ever stopped reading because of too much smut, but too much violence, definitely. Mostly, though, I quit if I can't find a connection to any of the characters.

  7. The most boring books? Anything by Charles Dickens. He writes about a coat for about three chapters only to tell you it's well worn and brown! Awful. I would leave it in a hotelroom immediately. And I actually base my boredom scale on Charles Dickens!
